*The Serpent

Coalridge was a town that wore its history on its sleeve. The once-bustling mining town had grown quiet, its cliffs and beaches now silent witnesses to the struggles of its people. When the call came in, the Verrowind Serious Crimes Unit was dispatched to investigate a poisoning that had left a corporate whistleblower, Martin Fenn, dead on the rocky cliffs that overlooked the tumultuous sea.

The SCU team arrived at the scene, their presence both anticipated and resented by the townspeople. Lead Investigator Mira Lorne stepped out of the van, her dark coat flapping in the sea breeze. Her green eyes scanned the crowd, sensing the familiar mix of hope and hostility.

Dr. Ivo Grell, the field pathologist, crouched beside the body. “Poison,” he muttered, rubbing his temple. “The telltale signs are all here. Cyanide, if I had to guess.” His gravelly voice carried a hint of dry humor, stark against the somber backdrop.

As Elias Vann set up his equipment nearby, tapping away on his laptop, he found traces of digital threats sent to Fenn’s phone. “Whoever did this wasn’t subtle,” he noted, adjusting his glasses. “These messages are practically begging to be traced.”

Yara Novik, the field investigator, controlled the crowd with her authoritative presence, while Celeste Arbour, the civilian consultant, wandered, her mind piecing together the historical threads that might link the present to the past.

The investigation led them into the heart of Coalridge, where Fenn had been a divisive figure. He had exposed corruption within the local mining company, a move that had won him enemies and admirers alike. The SCU knew that the key to solving the case lay in understanding the tangled web of relationships that surrounded Fenn.

As they delved deeper, a false confession from a disgruntled former colleague muddied the waters. The man claimed he had poisoned Fenn out of revenge, yet Mira’s intuition told her otherwise. She spent hours in silent contemplation, her pen tapping against her chin as she pieced together the contradictions in his story.

It was Elias who finally unearthed the clue that broke the case open. He discovered encrypted messages on Fenn’s computer, revealing a series of exchanges with someone inside the company. The messages were filled with jealousy and resentment, pointing to a motive deeper than revenge: envy.

The perpetrator was revealed to be a fellow whistleblower, someone who had felt overshadowed by Fenn’s spotlight. Consumed by jealousy, they had lured Fenn to the cliffs under the guise of sharing information, only to poison him instead.

The townspeople watched as the SCU escorted the perpetrator away, their faces a mix of relief and sorrow. The resolution was cold, a matter of logic and evidence, leaving an emotional void that could not be filled.

The case’s aftermath lingered, its echoes reaching all the way to Marleaux, where Celeste discovered connections to an old unsolved file involving similar corporate betrayals. The faded charm of Marleaux held secrets behind its pastel walls, secrets that hinted at a broader pattern of deceit and envy within Verrowind’s corporate world.

The SCU departed Coalridge, leaving behind a town that continued to grapple with its hardships. The people were hopeful that change might finally come, that the attention drawn by the SCU would lead to justice and reform.

As Mira Lorne drove the team back to Greyhaven, she couldn’t help but glance at the unsolved case photos pinned behind her closet doors. The Ghost Hunter had once again laid a specter to rest, but the shadows in Verrowind were many, and her work was far from over.
